You’re moving from California to the Denver area, and have no idea what to expect. Check out a list we created below to help you get an idea of how living in Colorado differs from living in California.
Just Wait 15 Minutes
Colorado is a high-desert plain state. With the Rockies to the west, and open plains of the Midwest to the east, the entire Front Range region is susceptible to some rapid weather changes. The saying in Colorado is: “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes.” Somedays, it really does change that fast. Overnight you’ll get lots of weather changes too, but these usually work in your favor.
There are numerous days during the winter where we’ll get 5 inches of snow, and then the next day, it’s 55 degrees and sunny. Unlike other places it snows, the snow doesn’t stick around for long here!
Other than the fast weather changes, Denver has a wonderful year-round climate. The dry air makes summers not too hot, and winters not too cold. The elevation also plays a role in the weather, because being that much closer to the sun has an undeniable warming effect. Winter days aren’t as bad thanks to the sun!
A Mile-High Adjustment
For the most part, the difference in elevation is manageable for people. The biggest recommendations we can provide are to hydrate a little more than normal, and make sure to have some extra sunscreen for the hot summer days. After about a month or two, you’ll have acclimated to the elevation entirely.
The Great Outdoors
Coming from California, we’re confident that you’ve enjoyed your fair share of nature. One of the things you’ll enjoy most about Colorado is the abundance of outdoor activities at your fingertips. Hiking, cycling, rock climbing, camping, kayaking, and of course snowboarding and skiing, Colorado really has it all. We’re certain you can live here for decades and not explore every trail, ski run, and cycling route Colorado has to offer!
Where Are All The Bumpers?
One thing we’re sure you’ll love most about the Denver metro and Front Range region is how much less traffic there is here! Now, don’t get us wrong, this isn’t Cleveland – there is still traffic. What you’re used to in California will make the traffic here seem negligible, though. I know it sounds impossible, but you can actually make 40 miles in 40 minutes in Denver. What do you usually get in L.A. in that amount of time, 4 miles?
A Transplant’s Paradise
Nowadays, it’s a challenge to find native Coloradans even in a large group of people. That’s because so many people from all over the U.S. are choosing Denver to settle down in. This is one of the best reasons to move here, in fact! Having so many transplants means that almost everyone you meet is super welcoming, friendly, and generally excited to help out newly arrived pilgrims on their journey! Most of us have gone through the same things you’ll be going through, and we’re always happy to help.
Other than that, the culture of Denver and the entire Front Range region is laid-back western with an emphasis on the outdoors and health and wellness. We may be biased, but we can’t imagine many better places for Californians to move. You will fit right in!
